Lime trees are native to Limestone soils in England and Wales. The Lime tree does not produce the strong sucker growth around the base of the trunk often associated with the Large Leaved Lime Tilia platyphylos. Flowers from mature Lime trees attract bees in early July. Lime leaves are alternate and 13in long they are dark green and shiny on top with orange tufts of hair in vein junctions on the undersides. The timber is ideal for carving and turning. Lime tree wood is still used for sounding boards and keys of pianos and organs.
